Personalised Free Standing Letters - Photo Collage Keepsake Wall Art

Lovely idea, whether it's a gift for someone else or a keepsake for your home. Create a collage of photos on a single free standing wooden letter or create a name and use it as a name plaque for a bedroom or other wall art in the home. This can be done easily and at low - follow the steps below courtesy of Tara, from Anything & Everything.

A few weekends ago was spent celebrating with my friend that will be moving away to San Diego. So today I am sharing this personalized gift that a friend and I made for her. We wanted to make something that represented SLC and also all the fun times we had together with our group of girlfriends. So being that we live in Salt Lake City, we decided to get some wood blocks that say SLC and put a photo

Supplies:

Wood block letters
Paint
Sponge brush
Paint brush
Pictures
Mod podge
Polyurethane

I started off by painting the front of the wood letters black. Knowing that it would be hard to print my photos to match the letters exactly, I painted them black to help hide any seams and mismatches.

Once the black paint was dry, then I painted the rest of the wood a pretty emerald-green color. I had such a hard time deciding which color to use, but I am happy with how this color turned out!

Now it's time to apply the pictures. Luckily I have a very talented husband who was able to put all the images together for me in a collage using photoshop, so I only had to make a few cuts. If you are unable to do this, you can easily still create the same look just by printing out your pictures individually and cutting them to fit how you like. Apply mod podge to the wood and then place the images on top, so it will be glued on to the wood. Let dry. Then using an X-Acto knife, I trimmed the edges of the pictures that were hanging over the wood.

After you have applied all the images to the wood with mod podge and it is completely dry, use a sponge brush and apply a thin coat of polyurethane over the top of the images and on all the painted wood areas.. This will help to secure the images on even stronger and it gives it a nice glossy finish to everything. When I made my DIY Wood Photo Block, I applied mod podge over the top of the image instead of the Polyurethane. I really like the polyurethane better, as I felt like the mod podge gave it a bluish tint once it dried.

Now you have a beautiful photo collage that can be displayed anywhere!

This would be a great gift for anyone and being that you can personalize it anyway you would like makes it even more special.

How to Decorate Wooden Letters for Name Plaques, Handmade Gifts and Wall Art

Paint them, cover them in fabric, sprinkle in glitter, or wrap in ribbon, there are lots of crafty ways you can decorate wooden letters. Create headings, name plates, signs, décor for special occasions and home decorations!

I had an old frame that has been in need of a face lift for some time, so I decided to give it a spruce up with some craft paint and then sanded it for a shabby chic look, and I’ve also used craft acrylic paint to decorate some wooden letters for my nephews bedroom . . .

How to Decorate Wooden Letters #Homecraft #WoodenLetters #DIY

How to Decorate Wooden Letters / Personalised Name Letters
You will need
  • Wooden letters of your choice
  • Selection of craft acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
How to make Wall Art You will need

  • Wooden frame
  • Wooden letters – I’ve used two X  and O letters
  • Turquoise, gold and white craft paint
  • Single paper sheet
  • Sandpaper
  • Glue Gun
How to make

  1. Start by painting your frame white and leave to dry.
  2. Meanwhile paint your letters with a layer of gold paint. Once dry, paint them turquoise and leave to set.
  3. Take your dried frame and start to sandpaper off the white paint to reveal the grey underneath to add a shabby chic look.
  4. Repeat the process with the letters until you get the desired effect.
  5. Take your chosen patterned paper and cut to size, then display in the frame – remove the glass.
  6. With your glue gun apply glue to the back of the letters and position in place.
  7. Leave to dry and then display!

1. Start by roughly sketching out your design on the letter in pencil first. I went for an animal/nature theme for my letters, but the possibilities are endless when it comes to designing your own letters.

2. Go over your design using craft acrylic. Make sure the first coat is completely dry before applying the next one, and then leave to dry. For a home decor project why not upcycle an old frame and create some unique and individual wall art for your home.

Happy 1st Birthday to Archie!! Handmade Monday 87

handpainted wooden name plaques & personalised gifts
Well, I wasn't sure I was even going to make it this week.  Things have been busy as usual and this last week included the 1st birthday of a gorgeous little boy called Archie.

With it being such a big birthday and the fact that his parents are very close friends of mine, I wanted to give him something special and of course something that he could keep.  So needless to say, I made his birthday presents ;o)

Archie's dad loves football and is a fireman, giving me two themes. Archie's mum and I opted for the Fireman / Transport theme - for what seems like obvious reasons to us.  (Football.....bah!)

This is what he got:

Fire Engine Name Plaque / Door Sign

name plaques door sign plate handpainted wooden personalised gifts
Fire Engine Name Plaque

A fire engine name plaque for his bedroom door.   Slight confession.... I actually made this a couple of months ago for him, but ended up holding onto it to show at a couple of craft fairs we attended (the shame....!).  It was definitely time to hand it over!

Transport Themed Wooden Wall Letters

I also made some transport themed wooden letters for his bedroom wall.  The letters are 20cm high (size of the capital letters) hand painted in royal blue and decorated with individually hand painted wooden vehicle shapes - including a fire engine, of course!

Personalised Wooden Trains

Personalised Handmade Wooden Trains - Gifts Ornament Decoration

Finally, we've wanted to add trains to our new free standing personalised plaques / ornaments so this was a perfect time to come up with a design.  As with the other plaques, there was a small and large train - which can be bought separately, but for Archie I wanted to use them as a set to spell out his whole name.  The thing I love most about these is that they can sit almost anywhere in a room; on a shelf, bookcase, windowsill or chest of drawers.  I also loved the bunting used on the fire engine and thought it would look cute on the trains too.

Realising that Archie is 1 and way too young to appreciate / notice (!) any of these gifts, I also bought him some weebles - so that he still had something to open and throw around the floor!   These were his favourite, of the gifts!

I opened the door to the postman on Thursday and was presented with this:

You'll be able to spot the trains in there, as well as some new and old shapes.  The new ones have kept me busy (and messy) all weekend.  Will be showing some pictures in the next post.

So now we're at the beginning of another week that is likely to fly past as quickly as the last, I'm going to visit handmade Monday to see what else has been happening in the crafting world!

Wooden Wall Letters - Sweet Dreams for Nursery or Bedroom

I've had some unpainted MDF letters spelling "Sweet Dreams" laid across my utility room worktop for at least 3 weeks now, begging to be decorated.  They were for my girls' bedroom wall, but because everything else is always more of a priority it's taken me a while to get around to painting them.

BUT I've finally done it and I'm, really pleased with how they look.  In fact I couldn't be more pleased (*slightly* smug grin), things don't always turn out exactly how I picture them, but they did in this case.

Wooden Wall Letters - Sweet Dreams Rose Buds & Beads

They both already have their names across the top of their beds, both with a butterfly theme so I wanted to create something different for their Sweet Dreams.  I decided on rose buds and white beads as it matched perfectly with my older daughters bedsheets, which is the bed you see when you walk into the room.

The wall space is quite large so I went for 20cm high letters so together they take up a lot of room.  Sweet is 86cm long and Dreams is 113cm long, so I'd only recommend this size if you do have the space (unless you are only using one name / word).

Wooden Letters - Not just for kids names

Wall letters can be used to spell pretty much anything you want and do not have to be limited to a child's name.  Here's one that a customer recently requested, 20cm white letters with butterflies spelling "Zzz" to go above her daughters bed.  I'm sure it's made a gorgeous accessory to the nursery.  Other ideas include "dream" "sleep", "princess" - you can let your imagination run wild.

Another customer requested Story Time in the Mirror chain letter wall letters and another customer wanted a phrase from a nursery rhyme in 5cm acrylic letters.  These are just some ideas, but really the options are endless.  You can choose any design or any type of letter to make any word or words that you desire.  See links for more information and prices:

Productive weekend!!

Well thanks to my very helpful husband taking the girls off my hands for the last two afternoons as well as letting me hoard the computer all weekend, I've managed to work on some more designs for my website.  I've had the ideas all along, but it's just finding the time to create them.  Now that I have pics I'll be adding them all to my site over the next few days.
I've managed to create some more 3D name frames for girls, canvas names for girls and lots more single letter names for boys.  Still have lots to create for girls but I will get there.  If only you could buy time!!
