Wooden Name Plaques For Girls: New Cute Hanging Name Plaques

2012 promises to be an interesting year, with lots and lots of new products available to buyt on our website. Over the last few months we have already been adding to our range of personalised gifts for kids, baby gifts and christening gifts, so we'll dedicate our next few posts to highlighting these.

First up is our really cute hanging name plaques - which can be used on doors, bed posts, on walls - anywhere you think they would make a lovely addition. We have already introduced a number of different wooden shaped plaques, including a gorgeous owl, cupcake and heart - there will be more to come.

Each wooden plaque can be painted almost any colours to make sure they will go with the existing nursery or bedroom decor. Plaque size is approximately 10cm high - these would make a perfect little gift for new babies, christenings, birthdays or just because....

We also have the same size mini plaques in 10cm high letters - using only the initial of the name, but including the name within the design. These wooden letters are chunkier than the wooden shapes at 12mm thick, and whilst being small look very prominent. They can be painted any colour or design (where size permits) have a look at our girls wooden letters to see what designs are available.

Each of these hanging name plaques come with ribbon to hand, but can be sent with sticky fixers instead if you'd prefer to attach them to the wall.

Butterfly Memorial Letters: A Tribute to Malayeka

When we returned from our 'holiday' we were pleasantly surprised to see that one of our customers had emailed us some photos of the Memorial Letters we had made, as a bespoke request, for her little girl's grave in March this year.

You may have seen the previous blog Bespoke request for Angel Baby Memorial Letters.

Wow!! I was obviously pleased to see that the letters worked well and looked lovely, but was absolutely amazed at the stunning tribute Julie had created for Malayeka.

Wow, it's certainly been a while. I'm actually surprised at how long it's been since I last updated this blog! How time escapes us....

Bespoke Request for Angel Baby Memorial Letters

I was approached by a customer with a very special and unique request - to create some memorial letters that spelt her angel baby's name - that she could display on the grave.

Our MDFs letters weren't up to the job as they would be no good outside, so we used acrylic. This also meant we could add spokes to the bottom of the letters, to secure them in the ground.

The result - these chunky, pretty metallic pink letters, which will reflect the light, decorated with butterflies and sparkling gems. We are yet to test the accessories against the elements, so we'll see how we go. I'll post a picture of the letters on the grave when I have one.

Wooden Letters - Not just for kids names

Wall letters can be used to spell pretty much anything you want and do not have to be limited to a child's name. Here's one that a customer recently requested, 20cm white letters with butterflies spelling "Zzz" to go above her daughters bed. I'm sure it's made a gorgeous accessory to the nursery. Other ideas include "dream" "sleep", "princess" - you can let your imagination run wild.

Another customer requested Story Time in the Mirror chain letter wall letters and another customer wanted a phrase from a nursery rhyme in 5cm acrylic letters. These are just some ideas, but really the options are endless. You can choose any design or any type of letter to make any word or words that you desire. See links for more information and prices:

Wooden wall letters - the chunkier, the better

Well, that's what we think anyway. Whether you're using the letters to spell a child's name on a bedroom or nursery wall or a word to decorate a space in the hallway or living room, using chunky wooden letters will give extra impact making them stand out even more on the wall. A much more effective finish!

All of our wooden letters are made from 12mm thick mdf. This is twice the thickness of most other sellers, but having created and compared the two sizes, I can reassure you that these look much better.

They can be made thicker, but it becomes much more costly to buy; make and post - however, as always, we'd always be happy to try and acommodate bespoke requests.

If this is the case, we are more than happy to provide you with a quote for a bespoke frame. January's Most Unusal Names for Boys and Girls

Creating personalised gifts and keepsakes gives an interesting insight into some of the more unusual names out there. We thought we'd share with you, each month, some of the lovely and unusual names we come across both for boys and for girls.

January's most unusual girls names included Ellicia and Larissa, with the most popular names being Ella and Lilly (which was a surprise as Ava is usually a firm favourite each month!).

For the boys, we loved Zayan and Cassius. Jack (much like Ava) is one of the favourites for boys and was the most popular name for us in January.

Different Types of Box Frames

There are really only two different kinds of box frames that you can buy and it's important to know the difference as it will have an effect on the finished look.

Deep Rebate Frame

The first type of frame is a deep rebate frame. These are made from one piece of wood (a deep rebate moulding) rather than having a box fixed to the back of them. Not only do these frames have a modern and contemporary feel, but because they are made from one piece of wood you have the option of either hanging them to the wall or leaving them to to stand on a shelf or windowsill. They look great from the side, so if you are hanging it from a wall you won't need to worry about the side profile.

Box Style Frame

The second type of frame is the box frame - these use a standard moulding for the frame face and have a box fixed to the back of the frame. The key advantage to this type of frame is that you can get a greater depth, giving you more flexibility as to what you can frame. For the deep rebate frames, choice is very limited for all aspects: colour, style and depth, as there are not a lot of deep rebate mouldings on the market.

We still use contemporary mouldings for our box style frames and the box is only visible from the side view. Because of how these are made we can also look into bespoke requests for our customers (something we can't do for the deep rebate frames) - whether the request is for a different colour frame or different dimensions - including depth, we can usually help.

Cheap Wooden Letters.....??

If you are looking for cheap hand painted wooden letters for your child's bedroom or nursery, then I'm not sure I'll be able to help you....

Chunky wooden letters, especially in the larger sizes, take time to paint and decorate to a high standard. If you are looking to purchase such letters from companies that place a lot of emphasis on individuality and 'make to order' rather than shipping in an abundance of the same letters made elsewhere, then this will obviously come at a cost. But the end result is that you are left with something unique, that is made with love and of good quality, rather than the same old product you have come across in all your friends and children's friends houses.

If however, you are willing to consider cheap alternatives.... then I most definately can help.

If you've fallen in love with some wooden letters, but budget is an issue you may need to re-consider the following:

Size - Could you reduce the size of the letters to reduce the cost?
Location - If you can relocate the letters to a smaller space, you could possibly get away with smaller letters
Initials - Using the initials of a child's name will reduce the number of letters you need
Single Wooden Name - you could purchase an extra large letter (the initial of the name) and include the whole name within the letter. This way you would only need to buy one letter and the larger size will make sure it's still prominent on the wall

If you are happy to look at alternatives to wooden letters, then I'll suggest the following:

Acrylic letters are a cheaper alternative to wooden letters, as they do not require painting and varnishing. They can still be decorated or sold plain and can also be provided in a variety of sizes
Mirror Letters (acrylic and shatterproof - so child friendly) also look fabulous and come in different sizes but again at a reduced cost.
Door Names with Acrylic letters - this would reduce the cost even further and would still make a special impact on the bedroom door.

Funky Mirror Shapes for Bedroom Walls

We have an exciting new product range for you. Acrylic mirror shapes, which can be used to decorate bedroom walls. These mirrors are made from acrylic and so are shatterproof. They can be attached to the wall with sticky fixers, like our wall letters, meaning no screws or nails are required.

Ideas for Wall Letters: Home Decoration

Wall letters have been around for a whole but are becoming an increasingly popular home decoration. They are so versatile and can look great anywhere. You can often find HOME, LOVE and PEACE in some of the most popular retailers, but if you are looking to be a little more adventurous and make your own personal stamp on it, here's a few ideas:

1) Children's Names - this is probably one of the most popular ways to use wall letters. You can buy them in wood, acrylic or mirror finish and in the wood or acrylic - you can purchase them plain or decorated. They look amazing on bedroom walls and are a fantastic personalised finish to any bedroom or nursery.

2) Nursery rhymes/ phrases - plain or mirror letters could also be used in a bedroom or nursery to spell out a favourite line from a nursery rhyme or perhaps a phrase to do with bedtime such as "Sweet Dreams".

3) Door/ Room Names - letters can be used to spell out the name of the child whose bedroom it is or the name of the room itself, for example "TOILET", "BATHROOM", "KITCHEN"

4) Favourite Phrases can be spelt out on a feature wall (LIVE LOVE LAUGH) or can be used on empty wall space in the house. As can random words such as EAT above the cooker, DRINK above the fridge.

5) Christmas Messages and Decorations. We're getting seasonal now... you can choose any message or words that you like including the obvious Merry Christmas, Joy, Peace, Noel and so on. If you have children you could make a decoration using the initial of their names, accessorised with christmas themed embellishments and using either a ribbon to hang it to the door or sticky fixers to attach it to their bedroom walls.

You don't have to stop at the initial you could even spell out their whole name - the best thing is this is a personalised christmas decoration that can be used year after year.

Here's some more photos sent in from a customer that bought a baby casting kit. She'd never used a casting kit before, but had some amazing results as you can see from the images below. These photos were all taken prior to painting but still illustrate the lifelike detail of each of the casts.

I'm sure there only a few people that get excited about frames - me being one of them, particularly when I took delivery of our new range of frames. We've had a number of requests from customers for different colours and sizes, so we've now added several more extra deep frames to our website.

The frames are all modern looking with a box fixed to the back, to get the extra depth. They are all 55m deep internally - giving much flexibility of what can be displayed in the frame.

Wooden Letters for Wedding Decoration

Wooden Initials Hanging in the Car

We love this original idea for wooden letters as wedding decorations. Our customer was mother of the groom and wanted to find something unique and personal for her

son and his fiancee for their wedding day. She decided to buy two wooden letters (the initials of both of their names) and hang them from the front seats of the wedding car, so they would be opposite them when they sat down. We painted the letters to match the wedding colour scheme and kept the decoration simply - using a butterfly for the brides letter (M) and a few stars for the groom's letter (A).

We were really pleased to hear back from our customer after the wedding, not only had they had a fantastic day but the bride and groom were also thrilled with their gift. After the wedding they hung them up on the wall above their bed as a wedding keepsake.

Wedding Keepsake Frames - Finally!

Well, it's been a long time coming, but my wedding keepsakes frames have finally been made. I've used two Empty Black Keepsake Frames, one with a twin aperture mount and the other with a single aperture mount.

For both keepsake frames I placed the photo and mount at the back of the frame so that I could display the items I wanted to keep, in front of them.

In keeping with the colour theme, I used a white mount and displayed: one of the thank you cards I had left (as this was smaller than the invitations but replicated the design); some of the imitation rose petals that we had used to scatter on the tables; and a small bunch of red roses to replicate the button holes for the men.

In the second frame I displayed some more of the rose petals, with a miniture bunch of white roses, used to replicate my bouquet and a snowflake table name card holder.

I used the same frames that I used to frame the baby foot casts I made of my two children and so they all look fab together.

Tips for Baby Keepsake Frames. 1. Choosing the Keepsake and Frame

If you like the idea of framing something special and sentimental to you, but don't know where to start, here's a few basic tips to help out. Since my website is geared to babies and children, this is where I will focus, but the same tips will apply to anything.

1) Choosing the keepsake. What is important to you? Do you have something in particular that reminds you of cherished times or a special occasion? For children this might be christening gifts that end up getting hidden away in a box, or a baby's first shoes, a comforter, the hospital band, a first nappy, 3d baby castings, a booty.....

2) Making sure you get a frame that fits. If you are buying one of our empty keepsake frames, you will need to measure the items prior to purchase to make sure they will fit. Depth is probably the most important factor here as it can be the most restrictive. We have a range of deep box frames in three different depths.

3) Mount or no mount... that is the question. How do you want your keepsakes displayed? Are you going for a less is more approach and framing a lone item? If so a mount would look great. If on the other hand you have several items to frame and you need the extra space, then you probably won't need the mount. If you do decide on mount, you can get more than one opening to split the display (e.g. photo on one side and a shoe on another).

4) Choosing the frame colour and style. Where is the frame going to be displayed? Which room? Do you want it to stand on a shelf or windowsill or hung on a wall? What decor will it need to match? By considering all of these questions, you will narrow down the colour and style that you are looking for.

More new products at For Keep's Sake! As we move, what seems to be very quickly!, into 2010 we are constantly adding new designs and products to our rapidly expanding website. Tip - If you're looking for some good value nursery bedding and don't mind about (very) limited choice - Dunelm Mill is a good place to look. The shop itself represents excellent value for money on most products.

I love their nursery bedding as not only is it good value, but I like the styles that they choose and rather than trying to sell it all in a bundle, you can buy whichever separates you like! This could make it more expensive than buying a bundle if you choose to purchase everything (admittedly I've not worked this out), but it gives you the flexibility and choice of just buying what you need!

I came across an article written by Richard Branson today, for the BusinessDay website, that I thought I'd share. I find him absolutely fascinating anyway and if asked who inspired me the most in life, when it comes to business, it would have to be him. I admire Richard Branson for who he is and am astounded by what he has managed to achieve throughout his life, sometimes against all odds.

His article talks about the 'bad times' being the best times to start a venture and dips into his own experiences. It's an interesting read and gives some good advice/ tips. Some of my favourite comments inclue:

"Throughout my career I have made decisions using instinct, but have also worked very hard at making those decisions work"

For Keep's Sake's: Top Tips for Baby Casting

Having helped a friend to create a cast of her babies feet at the weekend, with one of our baby casting kits, I thought I would write a blog this week to inclue a few very useful tips. So here they are:

1) Read the instructions fully before starting. If you're anything like me you'll have an allergy to instructions (I never seem to "have time" to read instructions). But I guarentee that the whole process will be easier if you know what it involves and what you need beforehand.

2) Be organised. Whilst the baby casting kits can be used by any 'first timer' you need to be organised and have everything you need at your fingertips. Because the moulding alginate sets quite quickly you need to move swiftly. Measure out all the required power and water before you are ready to make a start.

3) Have something ready to distract the baby or toddler when you are ready to create the mould. This really comes down to how old the child is. Children are wriggly and some may not enjoy the process simply because you are putting one of their nice little warm feet into a bag or container full of cold gloopy mixture. If they are old enough you can explain what you are doing ('making your foot'!) but if they are young it may help to have the television on, a treat to chew on, music and singing - anything that makes them feel comfortable and distracted!.

4) Feet are easier to cast than hands. Babies naturally clench their fists which doesn't always look attractive and because the fingers are so small, lots of air bubbles can get trapped, meaning that the cast can end up with holes (although these can be filled once the cast has set).

5) Be Patient. If you are new to this it might require a practice run first as it can take some getting used to. But you will be provide with enough material to create several baby casts so don't worry.

Productive weekend!!

Well thanks to my very helpful husband taking the girls off my hands for the last two afternoons as well as letting me hoard the computer all weekend, I've managed to work on some more designs for my website. I've had the ideas all along, but it's just finding the time to create them. Now that I have pics I'll be adding them all to my site over the next few days.

I've managed to create some more 3D name frames for girls, canvas names for girls and lots more single letter names for boys. Still have lots to create for girls but I will get there. If only you could buy time!!

Sneak Preview: New "Initial" Wooden Letter Names

I've been getting busy in the "studio" and wanted to share some images of some of the new products I'll be uploading to my website in the next week (hopefully!). As with the personalised single canvas names that are now available on our website, I also wanted to create a range of single wooden letter names.

The reason for this is simple.... it's sometimes too costly or takes up too much wall space for someone buying wooden wall letters for a child with a long name... i.e. isabella. It seems unfair that someone who has chosen a name that they love for their child should lose out because that name happened to have too many letters!

So here they are... I wanted to do some with an animal theme, some "girly" letters and some boyish ones. Let me know what you think, your comments would be appreciated.

Frame your Baby Keepsakes

It's amazing how quickly time flies after having a baby. The first few sleepless nights feel seem to last an eternity whilst you try your hardest to function in a sleep craved haze. But before you've had time to blink, you're celebrating your baby's first birthday, watching them stumbling around the room and are left wondering where the time went. And unbelievably the following years seem to dissapear even quicker.

But as parents we're not only left with our memories, but also with some very precious items that remind us of those first days, items that we will cherish forever. The first scan picture, the hospital bracelet, a first size nappy, the baby's favourite outfit, the first shoes, a special comforter or small toy, christening gifts and keepsakes. The list goes on.

Whatever the items are, they are important and it feels almost a sin to hide them away in a box in the attic, rarely to be looked at again. This is why I opted for a Keepsake Frame I didn't want to let go of things that reminded me of such special times and so instead, I framed them.

How Easy is Baby Casting?

Creating 3d castings of your baby’s hand or foot can be a very rewarding experience and needless to say, by doing it yourself, you can also save a lot of money.
The best place to start is with a baby casting kit. There are a number of companies that sell these online, including For Keep’s Sake with or without frames. The kit usually includes the following contents:

Chromatic Alginate or another moulding material. This is used to create the mould of the baby’s hand or foot. For life casting Alginate is the most popular moulding compound because it is completely safe and in fact used by dentists in the mouths of both adults and children to take dental mouldings. It can also capture all the fine creases in the skin, resulting in a life-like finish.
High Grade Casting Powder. This is used to create the cast and once dry can be painted in the colour of your choice.
Poly Bags or a Container. This will be used to create the mould in.
Cocktail sticks. Once the cast has set and is dry and the rubbery alginate mould peeled away from it, there are often little bits of the mould left in some of the skin creases of the case. Cocktail sticks are useful for cleaning these little pieces out
Stirrers
Paint and Paintbrush.
Deep rebate box frame. This usually includes a twin aperture mount so that a photo can be displayed as well as the casting.
Complete set of instructions.
Glue

There are 8 basic steps to the casting process:

Step 1 – Prepare the baby’s hand or foot by rubbing a generous amount of baby moisturiser on it. This will help to ease it out of the mould when it’s been created.
Step 2 – Measure the alginate, as per the instructions, and add the water slowly mixing it all the time. Mix vigorously to break down any lumps, the colour will turn pink whilst being mixed.
Step 3 – When the mixture has reached the desired consistency (consult instructions) you will need to pour it into the container or bag that you are using and place the foot or hand into the mixture.
Step 4 – Setting time will vary so again consult the instructions. Usually fast setting alginate is used, given a baby’s tendancy to wriggle, which be take under a minute to set. Once set, carefully remove the hand or foot so as not to tear the mould.
Step 5 – The casting powder is then mixed with water, stirring slowly and carefully to avoid air bubbles. Once the mixture has reached the desired consistency it is poured bit by bit into the mould, swirling the mixture around the mould to ensure that it reaches all the nooks and crannies. Once full the plaster is left to set.
Step 6 – Once dry, usually a few hours later, the mould can be broken off the cast. It is a rubbery like texture and will break away easily.
Step 7 – The cast can now be painted. Most kits include a silver or gold paint, but any colour acryllic paint can be used on the cast for an effective finish.
Step 8 – If you have chosen a kit with a frame, the last stage of the process is framing the cast. You may find that the flat side of the cast is a little uneven and may require a little light sanding. This can be done easily using a fine sandpaper. Once flat the casting can be stuck to the backing board and the back of the frame closed.

So how easy is baby casting? I think you'll agree, that provided you buy the right kit and get the right instructions it's much easier that you would have ever imagined.

3D casts of your baby’s hand or foot (or both) make excellent keepsakes and will ensure that you can never forget how small they once were. Invaluable!

Keepsake Frames for Baby Shoes - What a fab idea!!

I've always had a thing for shoes. Shoes, shoes, shoes. I own so many pairs, but since having two little girls, I just don't get the opportunity to wear them out as much as I used to!!

So has having children numbed this obsession at all? Nope, it's simply evolved it - I now love baby shoes!!
So you can imagine how reluctant I am to either throw away my favourite beautiful baby shoes once they have been outworn, or hide them away in the loft for no-one to see - what's the point?

Instead I have opted for framing them! They look fantastic in deep box frames either on the wall or left to stand on a shelf or windowsill. But for me, they had to have a cool and contemporary feel to so that they would complement my modern home.

This is how our 'Keepsake Frames' were born, incidentally. Why stop at baby shoes? Not everyone has a thing for shoes. But most, if not all mums, will have something that is special to them that they are not quite ready to let go of. Hospital bracelets? Baby's first outfit?
